Last winter, when Chung Soo-young saw a man rushing out of the women’s restroom at a chain coffee shop in downtown Seoul, the first thing she did was to scan all stalls in search of a hidden camera. Like many other South Korean women, Chung, 26, constantly worries that she could be secretly filmed in private moments. Her fear spiked, she says, when she saw the intruder and “realized I can actually be a victim.”

In South Korea, microcameras installed in public bathrooms for surreptitious filming are an everyday concern. Police data show that the number of “illegal filming” crimes sharply increased from 1,353 in 2011 to 6,470 in 2017.

The fear of digital peeping Toms has led women to stuff tiny balls of toilet paper into holes they find in public bathroom stalls or cover the holes with tape. Six months after her bathroom incident, Chung decided to act and put together her own “emergency kit” to thwart molka, or hidden cameras.

She started a crowdfunding project for the kit, and the response was greater than she had expected. More than 600 people bought the kit, which costs about $12 (14,000 Korean won) and includes a tube of silicone sealant to fill up holes, an ice pick to break tiny camera lenses and stickers to patch up holes.

Thinking of her kits as a “stopgap,” Chung also started building an archive of illicitly recorded videos and pictures she found online to demonstrate how serious the problem is. In September, during a search, she stumbled on a video of herself from that December day.

Once filmed, molka videos are quickly shared online. With the right search words in Korean, it is not difficult to find pictures and videos of women in bathrooms and changing rooms on file-sharing platforms and social networks such as Tumblr and Twitter. Thumbnails of such videos, tagged with an estimated age of the filmed women or the filming location, are posted with a messenger ID. Anyone can contact the seller, who is often the one who shot the film, and get gigabytes of voyeuristic videos for pennies.

hey listen, im talking! when you where a kid your dad had a fucking break down  and threw a lamp at your head, he missed but the mental and emotional trauma you sustained went unnoticed by all the adults around you, including the school Councillor who was getting paid DECENT money to look out for shit like that, and it festered in some deep part of your soul for years and years until it eventually manifested itself as a drinking problem. now all of that sucks and i know your sitting there, drunk off your face again, reading this going “lol tru my dad sure loved throwing lamps at me, probably because im a piece of shit” but your fucking incorrect! at least partly. granted, your dad did love throwing lamps at you. towards the end it was basically a Sunday ritual. your dad would be watching the news, screaming about how he hated the government, spitting half chewed morsels of the dinner your mom had cooked all over the floor, and then in the blinding peak of his rage episode youd walk within firing range and hed start clawing for the lamp. the lamp would smash, your mom would cry and then everyone would drive to superstore to get a replacement lamp and not stop for ice cream. BUT IT WASNT YOUR FAULT, and it probably wasnt even because he hated you. most likely it was the result of an entire life time of the worlds bullshit turning your dad into a callused husk who can only feel rage, hunger and horny-ness. does that make it ok? no. are you still drunk? yes, clearly. but the point im trying to make is that your destiny is not that of an unlovable landing pad for lamps. your just as lovable and human as everyone else. you just feeeel like you have wet trash for a soul because you where treated as such during childhood. but just because you feel it doesnt make it true? idk dude my dad used to swing a broom handle at me anytime the neighbors dog barked and iv been huffing glue all weekend, but lets you and me both try and get better

    um guys?

canada is currently considering banning imidacloprid, which is apparently “one of the most widely used bee-killing pesticides in the world”. this seems pretty huge, so if you’ve got two seconds, add your name to the list! as of posting this link, they need just over 8,000 more signatures by february 21!
